Service water in cooling systems: risk of Legionella
Companies that use evaporative cooling systems, cooling towers or wet separators in their production processes are required to have the service water flowing through these systems tested regularly for Legionella bacteria.
Legionella bacteria are environmental germs that are present in small numbers in groundwater. However, they can multiply in artificial water circuits, especially in pipe deposits under suitable temperature conditions. They can spread through the evaporation or atomisation of contaminated water and infect humans through inhalation.
Service water testing in brief
Microbiological testing of service water is carried out in accordance with the following standards:
Determination of Legionella bacteria in accordance with DIN EN ISO 11731
Determination of colony count at 22°C and 36°C in accordance with DIN EN ISO 6222
Sampling of service water may only be carried out by trained personnel in accordance with ISO 19548
Please contact us to arrange an appointment for sampling.
Obligation to test service water
In order to detect contamination in good time and thus prevent infections in humans, authorities require companies (in accordance with §3 paragraph 8 42. BlmSchV) to carry out regular service water testing.Sampling and microbiological testing (in accordance with §3 paragraph 8 42. BlmSchV) of service water is carried out by our accredited laboratories using standardised procedures.

Legionella
are naturally occurring environmental bacteria
usually multiply in water circuits in manufacturing facilities, such as evaporative cooling systems, cooling towers or wet separators.
spread through evaporated or atomised water
if Legionella bacteria are inhaled, they can make people ill

Frequently asked questions
A witness audit is an independent evaluation to assess whether a certification or inspection body correctly applies the relevant standard during audits or inspections.
It clarifies differences in how standards are interpreted, identifies bottlenecks in the audit process, and highlights areas for improvement.
The findings help standard owners and bodies to improve auditor training, strengthen the audit system, and — if needed — create and follow up on an improvement plan.
