New DIN EN ISO 45001:2023 standard: What you need to know
In December 2023, the new DIN EN ISO 45001:2023 standard was published, replacing DIN ISO 45001:2018. This standard now forms the basis for the certification of management systems for occupational health and safety.
Successful accreditation of the VQZ
The Normec VQZ certification body submitted an application for accreditation in accordance with DIN EN ISO 45001:2023 at an early stage and created the internal requirements for the transition. As a result, the certification body received its new accreditation certificates for DIN EN ISO 45001:2023 in April 2024.
What will change?
The new DIN EN ISO 45001:2023 standard is now officially recognized as a European Standard (EN). This update includes several important editorial changes:
Adoption as a European Standard: ISO 45001:2018 has been adopted unchanged.
Updated index: This improves navigation and understanding of the standard.
Adjusted terminology: “Persons” has been replaced by “visitors” and “client” by “employee” to ensure greater consistency and clarity.
Plural audit programs: Section 5.4 d) 8) now refers to “audit programs.”
Consistent terminology for risk assessment: In Section 6.1, “evaluation” has been replaced by “assessment.”
More specific terminology for hazards: Section 8.1.2 now uses “hazards” instead of “dangers.”
What does this mean for you?
The requirements for customers' current management systems will not change. The changes are mainly editorial in nature and have no direct impact on existing certifications. Certificates based on DIN ISO 45001:2018 will remain valid until December 31, 2026. The transition to the new standard must be completed by this date in order for the certificates to remain valid.
What do you need to do?
Acquisition of the new standard: Obtain DIN EN ISO 45001:2023 to understand the changes.
Assessment and adaptation: Evaluate the current management system and make the necessary adjustments in accordance with the new standard, including updating the documented information in accordance with section 7.5.3.
Audit and certification: Ensure that the system is ready for the transition during scheduled audits. All adjustments must be completed before the transition audit. If the transition takes place during a surveillance audit, you can obtain a new certificate upon request. For more information on costs, please refer to the complete customer information.
