New validated method for Mancozeb within the EBDC group
Recent tightening of regulations governing the export of fresh produce to France means that extra attention must be paid to a number of active substances. These include carbendazim, benomyl, thiophanate-methyl, glufosinate and mancozeb.
For a long time, there was no specific analysis method available for mancozeb. Normec Groen Agro Control therefore developed a validated analysis method within the EBDC group. This method enables exporters to demonstrate more effectively that their products comply with French regulations.
Reliable detection of Mancozeb
The analysis method consists of two consecutive steps:
Screening for total CS₂ (dithiocarbamates)
Each sample is first analysed for total carbon disulphide (CS₂) to determine the presence of possible dithiocarbamate residues.
Targeted analysis for mancozeb (LC-MS/MS)
When CS₂ is detected, we perform a targeted LC-MS/MS analysis. This allows us to distinguish between the three groups of dithiocarbamates.
The detection limit of this method is 0.01 mg/kg EBDC.

Important for sampling
When CS₂ is detected, it is necessary to regrind the sample for specific analysis. For this reason, approximately twice as much sample material is required as prescribed in EU Directive 2002/63/EC.
Minimum laboratory sample size according to EU Directive 2002/63/EC
Product category | Examples | Minimum sample size |
|---|---|---|
Small fresh produce (<25 g) | Berries, peas, olives | 1 kg |
Medium fresh produce (25–250 g) | Apples, citrus fruit, loose tomatoes | 1 kg and at least 10 items |
Large fresh produce (>250 g) | Cabbage, cucumber, bunches of grapes | 2 kg and at least 5 items |
Analysis | Internal code | Turnaround time (TAT) | Minimum sample quantity |
|---|---|---|---|
Dithiocarbamates specific distinction groups (Mancozeb) | BDS | 3–5 working days | Double the amount specified in EU Directive 2002/63/EC |
