CBR & Plate Load Testing

Normec i2 Analytical provides fully trained specialists and UKAS-accredited CBR and Plate Load Testing to support pavement design and assess ground bearing capacity. These tests provide critical data for construction projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and design requirements.

The California Bearing Ratio ( Nominal Plate CBR) test, based on IAN73/06, has been withdrawn. National Highways stipulate DCP (Dynamic Cone Penetrometer) FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer) and the LWD ( Lightweight Deflectometer). The Plate Load Test is still used to determine load bearing capacity for piling and crane instalations.

Nominal CBR test

The Nominal CBR test is typically used for materials with a nominal size greater than 20mm, requiring kentledge (plant) as a reaction force, provided by the client. For materials smaller than 20mm, Normec i2 Analytical offers the Plunger CBR using its fleet of 4×4 vehicles, eliminating the need for kentledge and freeing up on-site plant.

To assess ground suitability for cranes and piling rigs, the Plate Load Test (BS1377-9) provides a rapid evaluation. Using client-supplied technical data, Normec i2 Analytical can replicate bearing pressures, ensuring stability and preventing ground shear or failure. Recent DMRB updates have replaced Nominal Plate CBR with TRL DCP, Lightweight Deflectometer, and Laboratory CBR for highway design assessments.
