70 catering outlets, one goal: safety and quality

From restaurants and hotels to mobile ice cream carts and self-service stations for children, Efteling has around 70 different catering outlets. Hygiene is an absolute priority here: not only for food safety, but also to inspire confidence in visitors. Every day, thousands of meals must be prepared safely and hygienically, and an incident could harm both the health of guests and the park's reputation. Constructive and proactive approach

Normec Foodcare carries out around 100 inspections at Efteling every year. These are based on a carefully coordinated schedule, which determines how often inspections are needed at each location. In addition to regular checks, inspectors also take samples and contact prints to monitor hygiene conditions. The inspections are carried out unannounced to get as realistic a picture as possible of daily practice.

If something deviates from the standard, the inspectors look for the underlying reason and assess whether adjustments are necessary. This helps Efteling to continuously improve and minimize risks. “Normec Foodcare's inspectors look beyond a standard checklist,” says Hanno. “They don't just assess whether something is right or wrong, they ask questions. This approach provides valuable insights and helps us to maintain a high level of performance.”

Good & Green: a joint approach

Efteling uses the ‘Good & Green’ methodology, a strict standard of legal requirements whereby inspection results are shared with the NVWA.

This means that catering outlets are only rated ‘green’ if they score at least eight. “We want to show that we take food safety really seriously,” says Hanno Engwerda. “Thanks to the inspections carried out by Normec Foodcare and our own internal checks, we achieve an average score of 8.5 – and we are aiming even higher.”
