Spotlight on UK Environmental Labs: EIA Meets with UKAS Chairman

Championing environmental excellence: EIA meets with UKAS chairman to discuss sector opportunities

Ken Scally, our Technical & Quality Director and Chair of the EIA Environmental Analysis and Testing Group, recently joined key industry figures at the House of Lords to discuss the vital role of the UK environmental laboratory sector.

A sector of strategic importance

The UK environmental laboratory sector is a powerhouse of scientific expertise and innovation. With a turnover of £108.1 billion and over 300,000 people employed across the country, the sector plays a critical role in areas such as soil and water analysis, PFAS detection, microplastics research, asbestos testing, and food hygiene.

Dr. Ken Scally emphasised the sector’s often under-recognised contributions:

“The UK Environmental Labs sector is doing truly amazing work that often goes unrecognised. This meeting is a fantastic opportunity to highlight the significant contributions our EIA members make to the UK economy and to government priorities, such as the Deputy Prime Minister's manifesto commitment to build 1.5 million homes, many of which are on brownfield or greybelt sites.”

Accreditation as a cornerstone of trust

A key focus of the meeting was the role of UKAS accreditation in ensuring the quality, reliability, and global recognition of environmental testing services. UKAS provides a government-endorsed, peer-reviewed framework that underpins trust in laboratory results - an essential factor in regulatory compliance, public health, and environmental protection.

The EIA reaffirmed its strong relationship with UKAS and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to deepen collaboration. Accreditation not only supports technical excellence but also opens doors to new markets and strengthens the UK’s international reputation in environmental science.

A platform for policy and progress

The EIA’s Environmental Analysis and Testing Working Group, which meets quarterly, continues to serve as a vital forum for dialogue between laboratories, government, and industry stakeholders. These meetings address pressing regulatory and policy issues, helping to shape a more responsive and resilient sector.

This latest engagement with UKAS is part of a broader effort to ensure that environmental laboratories are equipped to meet future challenges - from climate change and biodiversity loss to urban regeneration and water quality.

Looking ahead

As environmental challenges grow more complex, the role of accredited laboratories becomes even more critical. The EIA’s ongoing dialogue with UKAS reflects a shared commitment to scientific integrity, innovation, and sustainable development.

At Normec, we’re proud to be part of this dynamic sector. Our laboratories are aligned with the highest standards of quality and accreditation, and we remain committed to supporting national and global environmental goals.
