Biomass Electricity Sustainability Ordinance
Certification of Biogas and Biomass Plants
Since January 1, 2022, many biogas and biomass plants in Germany are required to obtain sustainability certification in accordance with the Biomass Electricity Sustainability Ordinance (BioSt-NachV), including their supply chains. Biogas plants and biomethane CHP units that produce electricity and heat from renewable raw materials, waste, and residues must be certified from an installed thermal input of 2 MW (total combustion thermal input). Facilities using solid biomass, such as biomass power plants, are subject to certification from 20 MW upwards. To continue receiving EEG subsidies, plant operators must submit the SURE sustainability certificate to the grid operator.
Due to an extension of the deadline, operators have until December 31, 2022 to submit this proof. If you do not yet have an offer for sustainability certification under SURE or REDcert, take this opportunity and contact Steffen König at +49 2561 44915-12 or via email at skoenig(at)uppenkamp-partner.de.
