Certifying Green Gas Production

Certification of Green Gas from Mono-Manure Digestion

Green gas is gaining popularity as a sustainable energy source, and for farmers, mono-manure digestion is an attractive method for producing it. In mono-manure digestion, only animal manure is fermented to produce biogas, which is then upgraded to green gas. To ensure that the produced gas meets sustainability standards, certification is essential. Normec QS supports farmers in this process by certifying their green gas production according to standards such as ISCC and Better Biomass (NTA 8080).

What is mono-manure digestion?

Mono-manure digestion is a technique where animal manure is fermented without the addition of other organic materials. This process takes place in a digester, where bacteria break down carbon chains in the manure into biogas – a mixture of methane, CO₂, and residual substances. After further processing, the biogas can be injected into the natural gas grid as green gas. Once this gas is injected, a Guarantee of Origin (GvO) is issued in VertiCer. Certified producers receive added value for these GvOs, as explained in this article by Rabobank.

Green gas certification

Normec QS plays a key role in certifying facilities that produce energy in a sustainable way. Green gas from mono-manure digestion is an important part of this. During an audit, we assess the requirements of the applicable standards. For mono-manure digestion, we evaluate the supply of manure, the digestion installation, the upgrading facility, and the final claim made on the GvOs. As manure achieves a very high emission reduction, we are seeing more and more mono-manure digesters registering with us for certification.
