Certified Green Hydrogen Thoroughly Audited by Normec QS
Proud of Nobian: European First in Green Hydrogen Certification
At Normec QS, we are proud of our client Nobian, who, as the first large-scale producer in Europe (>100 MW), has achieved the ISCC EU certification for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO). This milestone not only advances their team but also propels the entire renewable fuels sector forward.
Nobian’s certified chlor-alkali electrolysis plant in Rotterdam is now the largest RFNBO-certified green hydrogen factory in Europe, with an annual output of 14,000 tonnes of green hydrogen produced using locally sourced renewable electricity. The production of green hydrogen emits ten times less carbon than grey hydrogen and can be achieved using renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, or hydropower. This is a significant step towards a climate-neutral future.

Since the European Commission’s recognition earlier this year, RFNBO certification under the ISCC framework has become a reality. With the first official certificate awarded at an industrial scale, Nobian claims a pioneering achievement.
From the outset, Normec QS has been closely involved, performing pilot audits in cooperation with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). It is an honour to be the first in the Netherlands to present a certificate under this new framework. This proves that certification of green hydrogen is not merely theoretical — it is happening now. Congratulations to Nobian, and thank you for allowing us to be part of this historic milestone.
