Quality, Safety, and Environment Auditor

What will you be doing?

No two days will be the same. For example, take this week's schedule: On Monday, you visited a small cleaning company, Tuesday you audited a mid-sized microchip manufacturing business, and today you’re auditing a company with 1200 employees in the civil engineering sector. What will you be doing there? Checking how the company complies with safety, quality, and environmental standards.

A typical day at Normec NCK

Your day starts with a coffee break with the management team and the QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment) coordinator. To break the ice, you ask how the company is doing in general. It’s a busy time for the sector—how are they managing the full order book? And how are they dealing with the tight labour market? Are they able to complete their projects successfully? You listen carefully, gathering important information during this informal conversation.

Once the coffee is finished, you take a walk around the company. You observe whether what you see matches what you just discussed. You chat with the planner, project manager, and site manager. You also plan interviews with the head of the administration department and the finance manager. You inquire about their work and dig deeper into their processes.

Back at your desk, you conduct a document review. You study, among other things, the management review, results from recent internal audits, and compliance checks.

In the second half of the day, you head out to the field to check if the company’s self-developed procedures are being followed. Are employees adhering to safety guidelines and wearing personal protective equipment? These are the details you focus on. You also look into how the company handles budget overruns in projects, customer complaints, and how they record trend analyses.

By the end of the day, you have a final discussion with the management. You report that you have discovered some imperfections in their system. Although this is a setback for them, they appreciate your findings and commit to addressing the issues. A colleague will follow up in three months to check if they have properly implemented your suggestions.

You finish your day feeling satisfied. The audits you conduct truly make a difference. Thanks to your expertise, companies know how to work more carefully, leading to satisfied customers. This makes your job as a Quality, Safety, and Environment Auditor not only varied but also socially relevant. For you, that’s the most rewarding aspect.
