How VR Training Supports a More Sustainable Future
Sustainability often begins with a shift in perspective. At Normec ISEC, that shift came when the team began rethinking how industrial firefighting training could be delivered without compromising realism, safety, or impact. For years, traditional training methods relied on large-scale physical simulations, using thousands of litres of propane gas to recreate industrial fire scenarios. These sessions are intense, immersive, and effective - but also resource-heavy and environmentally demanding. This sparked a shift. A trainer within Normec ISEC saw potential in Virtual Reality (VR) as a tool to simulate complex fire scenarios. What started as a bold suggestion quickly evolved into a new approach. To bring the idea to life, Normec ISEC invested in suitable software, hardware and upskilling for the team. With support from leadership and a willingness to explore new possibilities, the team began integrating VR into their training programmes.
The impact of innovation
The results have been transformative. Each Basic Fire Team Leader training session done with VR saves around 7,000 litres of propane gas. With multiple sessions held annually, the environmental savings are substantial. But the benefits go beyond emissions.
VR allows for rapid scenario changes, eliminating the need to reset physical environments. This efficiency was key when Normec ISEC was selected to train team leaders from both public and private fire services in the Zeehaven Schelde region. Multiple were held without the logistical burden of transporting equipment or deploying fire trucks. This saved 21,000 litres of propane and significantly reduced emissions from travel
Even more compelling is the ability to train for scenarios that cannot be safely recreated in real life. At the nuclear power plant in Doel, VR now enables disaster preparedness training that was previously out of reach.
A mindset that moves us forward
This shift is not just about technology. Embracing VR required openness, curiosity, and a willingness to challenge long-held beliefs. It reflects a broader mindset within Normec: one that values innovation not for its novelty, but for its potential to create lasting, meaningful change.
At Normec, sustainability is not a side initiative. It’s embedded in how we think, act, and evolve. The adoption of VR in industrial firefighting training is one example of how we turn responsibility into action. It’s about thoughtful decisions, bold steps, and a commitment to doing better.
